The purpose of present study was to identify the remineralization effects of saliva and
different fluoride agents of initial stage of artificially induced enamel caries.
In present study, sixteen extracted premolars of eight patients(14¡¾2 or 12-16 Yrs)
were collected, fourty-eight enamel slabs were chosen and embedden in epoxy resin for
test regimens. Test regimens were divided to six test groups ; sound enamel(I),
artificially initial enamel caries lesion(II) as control groups and saliva(III), NaF mouth
rinse(IV) SMFP dentifrice(V), APF topical gel(¥µ) as test groups. (II)-(¥µ) groups
except(I) group were demineralized with STPP acidified solution. Then, for
remineralization in vivo, orthodontic retainer with embedding enamel regimens for (III)-
(¥µ) groups were worn to sixteen examiners for fourteen days.
For analysis of remineralization effect, microhardness tests with Knoop hardness
diamond were done by loading indenter perpendicular to the outer surface of enamel
regimens, respectively.
The results were as follows :
1. Remineralization groups were found significantly higher mean value of
micro-hardness than artificially induced initial enamel caries group(p<0.05).
2. In remineralization groups, different fluoride agent groups of NaF mouth rinse,
SMFP dentifrice and APF topical gel were found significantly higher mean values of
microhardness than saliva group, respectively(p<0.05).
3. In different fluoride agent groups, NaF mouth rinse group was found the highest
mean value of microhardness and APF topical gel group was found the lowest mean
value of microhardness. Otherwise, NaF mouth rinse group and SMFP dentifrice group
were found no significant difference with each other, but, significant difference was
found APF topical gel group with them.
